The syn- and anti-isoprenoid units 1a and 5a have been prepared in good yields from the corresponding cis- and trans-2,6-dimethylcyclooctanones 2a and 6a obtained, in turn, through skeletal rearrangement of the bicyclo[3.3.1]nonanic precursor 8a. The 2a/6a ratio ranges from 1:1 to 4:1 depending on the reaction conditions.

Abstract
