The mirror of Narcissus. Cardano speaks on his own life

This essay attempts to evoke some of the most profound motives that lead Cardano to write, particularly about himself. The philosopher, who shies away from the vain honors of public life, writes because he is stimulated by the aspiration for glory and the desire to be recognised and loved by others, but also to alleviate his own pain. He does not hesitate to explore with great sincerity less edifying aspects and tendencies of his own personality as well as certain themes which men would rather not talk about, such as erotic obsession and the fear of death.

Queste pagine cercano di far emergere alcuni dei motivi più profondi che inducono Cardano a scrivere, e in particolare a scrivere di sé. Il filosofo, che sceglie di vivere lontano dai vacui onori della vita pubblica, scrive sollecitato dall’aspirazione alla gloria e dal desiderio di essere riconosciuto e amato dagli altri, ma anche per trovare sollievo alla devastazione del dolore. E il suo sguardo non esita ad esplorare con estrema sincerità aspetti e tendenze poco edificanti della propria persona, e argomenti – come l’ossessione erotica, la paura della morte - di cui gli uomini preferiscono tacere.
