Testimonianze di Vita Famigliare nelle catacombe romane

A number of figurative scenes showing echoes of family life (although rare) are documented in Roman painting and sculpture. These images, although showing moments from the private life of the deceased, can be associated with symbolic themes which, alluding to a beatified state either achieved or desired for the deceased, diminish the realism of the representations. The epigraphic documentation, that is the figured and/or written code inscribed on the marble slabs, is richer and more articulate. In particular, in funerary texts the repertory of formulae used to describe the qualities of the spouses, the harmony of their life together and the relationship with their children tangibly manifest, a vast range of situations relating to the “private-intimate” sphere.

Nella produzione pittorica e scultorea romama sono documentate, sia pure raramente, alcune situazioni figurative delicate nelle quali si possono cogliere echi di vita famigliare. Tali immagini, pur testimoniando, momenti intimi della vita del defunto, possono associarsi a tematiche simboliche che, alludendo a uno stato beatifico acquisito o augurato al defunto, sfumano la portata realistica. La documentazione epigrafica, intendendo per tale il codice figurato e/o scritto inciso sulle lastre marmoree, risulta più ricca e articolata. Nei testi funerari, in particolare, il repertorio formulare impiegato nella descrizione delle qualità dei coniugi, dell'armonia del loro vivere insieme, del rapporto con i figli manifesta in modo tangibile, una vasta gamma di situazioni riconducibili alla sfera del"privato-intimo".
