The wage trend in manufacturing turns out to be strongly influenced by employment growth in the same sector and the general unemployment rate in the Italian economy, while productivity growth plays a less important role. Two institutional changes: the abolition of wage indexation in and the reform of national wage bargaining in 1992 turn out to have been of importance in determining a change in average growth rates of manufacturing wages.
