The handbook of Adult Education is primarily aimed to depict a theoretical frame of reference, expressed from a critical perspective, of the discipline. In so doing the handbook underlines the primary role of researching and depicts the historical development of the discipline, making reference to the most important scholars in the field and the different theoretical approaches their represent. The main epistemological perspectives are approached in two different but complementary ways: the first focussing on adulthood, the second drawing attention to few background issues such as subjectivity, learning and competence development. This 2nd edition of the handbook contains also a monographic section on knowledge, competence and lifelong learning, which represent important points of reference, recently defined on both theoretical and practical level, within the discipline. Furthermore it offers the readers (both teachers and students) the opportunity to integrate the theoretical path suggested with their own reflections and research experience.
