The italian Gestionary is presented, a Dictionary of the Symbolic gestures used by the Hearings in Italy. The paper shows how the lexical items are represented in a logical format, and how this can provide a form to represent the ambiguity of gestures. The notion of gesture ambiguity is defined and different types of ambiguity are discussed; their relation to context, and the way in which context allows dis-ambiguation, is illustrated with example taken from Italian symbolic Gestures.

Abstract

The italian Gestionary is presented, a Dictionary of the Symbolic gestures used by the Hearings in Italy. The paper shows how the lexical items are represented in a logical format, and how this can provide a form to represent the ambiguity of gestures. The notion of gesture ambiguity is defined and different types of ambiguity are discussed; their relation to context, and the way in which context allows dis-ambiguation, is illustrated with example taken from Italian symbolic Gestures.
