The essay traces the contours of American independent women's cinema since its inceptions in the late 1980s to nowadays. It considers the formal and ideological politics of such a cinema in relation to "identity politics". Indie women's cinema tunes aesthetic projects to the representation of women's differences, by paying attention to race, age, ethnicity, class and sexual preference. In the essay I also consider the role of the Sundance film festival in promoting such a cinema.

Abstract

The essay traces the contours of American independent women's cinema since its inceptions in the late 1980s to nowadays. It considers the formal and ideological politics of such a cinema in relation to "identity politics". Indie women's cinema tunes aesthetic projects to the representation of women's differences, by paying attention to race, age, ethnicity, class and sexual preference. In the essay I also consider the role of the Sundance film festival in promoting such a cinema.
