Some recent public spaces are designed and presented to be “the place” of social interaction and integration between the individual and the community. In these cases architects and planners, using a mixed-methods approach (Carmona at UCL) and interrogating different disciplines (ARUP, OMA-AMO, pre-rex MIT), have learned from previous failures how to integrate functions in a different and more complex way. These cases are interesting experiments of reconstruction after natural disaster, projects for climate adaptation and for energy conservation at the scale of the neighborhood and city. These experiments offer a renewed relationship between technology, history and the internal rules of the discipline and society. The paper examines some of these cases and try to figure out the need to re-practise and re-theorise contemporary urban design.
