This paper deals with two lexical items used as vague nouns in Italian: cosa and roba. The aim is to briefly outline their lexical funtions and to survey the development of their pragmatic uses within specific discourse patterns (such as “general extenders”, “topicalizers”, and so on). The study is based on a corpus of three novels by A. Baricco and their translations into Russian in order to describe differences and similarities between the two languages in the coding of vagueness
