Trying to give a positive interpretation of borderlands’ life and to escape the narrow schemes of the imposed identities, Anzaldúa proposes a culturally chosen and mixed identity, the New Mestiza’s one. But in doing that, she also refers to a kind of identity that is even more rigid than the national one: the racial identity. The coexistence of these two apparently opposed approaches is linked to the ideas of one of the most recognized reference points on Latino identity issues: José Vasconcelos’s La Raza Cósmica. The aim of my essay is to highlight the multiple identities discussed in Anzaldúa’s work and also to analyze how she manages to put together apparently opposite approaches.
