Principal aim of this essay is to make a historical sketch of the origin and further developments of the academic disciplines about religions. A brief introduction on the contemporary debate about the subject matter “religion” will be followed by a map of the Italian academic disciplines about religions. This description will give an up-to-date report about position and role of these subject matters in the Italian universities : first of all, the history of religions, the sole institutional subject matter ; then the anthropology, the sociology, the psychology and the philosophy of religion(s).
