This chapter provides a comprehensive picture of the studies conducted on the acquisition and teaching of vocabulary in Chinese as a foreign language. First of all, a brief illustration of the features of Chinese words is reported, followed by the description of the debate on Chinese lexical unit and by the review of the lists proposed for Chinese vocabulary. Then, the literature concerning vocabulary acquisition is discussed by presenting different theoretical and experimental studies on acquisition models and learning strategies. The last section reports the main findings in the field of vocabulary instruction and illustrates a few methods and approaches.
