Pussa via! tra romanesco e italiano

The exclamatory phrase pussa via! ‘push off, go away’, is used in the Rome dialect to shoo away a dog or to express distaste towards annoying things or individuals. The phrase is first attested in the Rome dialect in 1875, and occurs, also in the form pissa via!, in other dialects of Latium, Umbria and the Marche. The earliest occurrences in Italian texts (by authors from Rome or Latium) date from 1906 and become more frequent in the Fifties, when the phrase enters the standard language, probably due to its use in movies. As regards the etymology, the earlier passa via! used by Belli and Trilussa in similar contexts would suggest that the origin of the phrase should be sought in passare ‘pass’ rather than pussare ‘push’. At the same time a possible onomatopoeic origin ought to be considered: the a of passa may have become u under the influence of the interjection/exclamation puh!, which is employed to express disgust. Alternatively the origin of the phrase may have to be linked with the form pss!, a form used to call attention. On the basis of the contexts in which it is used the form pussa may be treated as an imperative verbal form which has been grammaticalized as an exclamation. The appearance of pussa via! in written texts only after the unification of Italy, when Rome became the capital and was consequently affected by a substantial wave of immigration, especially from the neighbouring districts, is a reminder of the fact that we ought to reconsider afresh the processes of interaction between the Rome dialect, the neighbouring dialects, and Standard Italian in the course of the last century.

L’articolo si occupa della locuzione esclamativa romanesca pussa via! ‘vattene via’, usata per scacciare un cane o per esprimere fastidio nei confronti di persone o cose moleste. L’espressione risulta attestata nel romanesco a partire dal 1875 ed è documentata, anche nella forma pissa via!, in altri dialetti laziali, umbri e marchigiani. Le prime attestazioni in italiano (in autori romani o laziali) si datano a partire dal 1906 e si intensificano negli anni Cinquanta, quando, molto probabilmente anche grazie al cinema, pussa via! diventa di uso nazionale. Sul piano etimologico, il precedente di passa via! in Belli e in Trilussa in contesti simili porta a pensare che proprio in passare (e non in pussare ‘spingere’) vada individuata l’origine della locuzione. È però ipotizzabile anche una parallela matrice onomatopeica: la vocale a di passa potrebbe essersi trasformata in u per influsso di puh!, interiezione che esprime disgusto; oppure alla base dell’espressione potrebbe esserci pss!, usato come segnale di richiamo. Sulla base dei contesti d’uso, pussa può essere considerata come una forma verbale imperativale, per quanto ormai grammaticalizzata come interiezione. L’emersione nello scritto di pussa via! solo dopo l’Unità d’Italia, l’erezione di Roma a capitale e la conseguente ondata immigratoria che investì la città (soprattutto dalle regioni contermini) invita a riconsiderare la dinamica dei rapporti tra romanesco, dialetti circostanti e italiano nel corso dell’ultimo secolo.
