This article helps retrieve a «history form the margins» of the Egyptian Marxist move- ment before the «setback» of the June War of 1967 which illustrates the complex and often paradoxical reality of the relationship between Egypt’s Marxists and Nasser: while they ultimately accepted to contribute to create the image of Nasser as icon of the Arab Progressive and anti-imperialist struggle, Nasser himself was always too suspi- cious to allow them any real in uence on his regime’s supposedly progressive politics.

Abstract

This article helps retrieve a «history form the margins» of the Egyptian Marxist move- ment before the «setback» of the June War of 1967 which illustrates the complex and often paradoxical reality of the relationship between Egypt’s Marxists and Nasser: while they ultimately accepted to contribute to create the image of Nasser as icon of the Arab Progressive and anti-imperialist struggle, Nasser himself was always too suspi- cious to allow them any real in uence on his regime’s supposedly progressive politics.
