In the last 15-20 years, local and national public policies at the territorial level in Rome have failed to effectively address the rising levels of socio-economic inequalities, which appear to be geographically concentrated and sensitive to distance decay from the city center. The aim of this work is to examine the spatial distribution of socio-economic inequalities within the municipal territory of Rome, and to explore the conditions that influence them. To this end, we analyze quantitative data from different sources for 155 urban districts (zone urbanistiche). We perform a multicriteria analysis combining different socio-economic indicators into a single synthetic indicator (ISSZU-Indice di Sviluppo Socioeconomico per Zona Urbanistica), so as to obtain a level of socio-economic development for each district. The empirical results show that socio-economic development levels, are significantly dependent upon the central position, the accessibility to a broad set of urban functions and services, and the lack of socio-economic disease.
