The Italian language has often been linked to music. The language of opera librettos and the one of light music songs have a remarkable tradition of study. However, the language of a particular genre has been completely neglected, the one of the “romanza da salotto”, which also, during XIX century and in the early XX century, it had a considerable spread in all Europe: it is enough to remember Francesco Paolo Tosti’s success in England, probably the most representative author of the musical genre. This study, by reviewing a series of examples, intends to provide a first characterization of Italian language of the “romanza da salotto”, at various levels of linguistic analysis, showing its particularities even in comparison to the language of contemporary opera.
