The journey before the journey. Beliefs, myths and desires from odeporic terrestrial experiences to extraterrestrial ones – This paper reflects upon how, over the centuries, the destinations of journeys were imagined before the journey had actually taken place. Fantasy and imagination, together with the reworking of scant, indirect and confused information, combined with the hopes and fears which have always inspired men coming to grips with the widening of geographical horizons – now fully exogeographic – to build a complex picture of extreme interest in its analysis for historical geographers. Among the odeporic experiences of ancient, modern and contemporary exploits, elements of continuity can be identified between the descriptions and pictures of distant lands, with their inhabitants, and the extraterrestrial spaces (uninhabited or inhabited?) towards which human endeavour points today. The era of Exogeography is opening before us. The pictures and descriptions of the past, like today’s odeporic sources, beyond actually talking about the “other”, tell us much about the societies which produced them. They are closely bound to men’s auto-representation, as a group and a society, with the notion of the world of which we were and are the bearers, more than of worlds actually encountered. Rereading the ancient and modern sources – through the example of the “Islands of gold and silver” – puts before us a process which continues and is markedly similar to our present and future, with the atavistic hopes and fears that reappear and still question us.

Credenze, miti e desideri dalle esperienze odeporiche terrestri a quelle extraterrestri – Il contributo vuole riflettere su come sono state immaginate, nei secoli, le mete dei viaggi prima che questi fossero effettivamente realizzati. La fantasia e l’immaginazione, combinate con la rielaborazione di poche e confuse notizie giunte per vie indirette, insieme alle speranze e alle paure che da sempre animano gli uomini alle prese con l’allargamento dell’orizzonte geografico, ora pienamente esogeografico, restituiscono un complesso quadro molto interessante da analizzare per i geografi storici. Tra le esperienze odeporiche compiute nell’antichità, quelle moderne e le avventure contemporanee, si colgono elementi di continuità nella descrizione e rappresentazione delle terre lontane, con i loro abitanti, e gli spazi extraterrestri (disabitati o abitati?) verso cui punta oggi l’espansione umana. Si apre l’era dell’Esogeografia. Le raffigurazioni e le descrizioni del passato, come le fonti odeporiche attuali, più che parlare realmente dell’“altro” ci dicono molto delle società che le hanno prodotte. Stretto è il loro legame con l’autorappresentazione degli uomini, come gruppo e società, con l’idea del mondo di cui eravamo e siamo portatori, più che dei mondi effettivamente incontrati. La rilettura delle fonti antiche e moderne – tramite l’esempio delle “Isole d’oro e d’argento” – ci pone davanti a un processo che continua e che mostra tratti di grande somiglianza con il presente e il futuro prossimo, con le ataviche speranze e le paure che si ripresentano e ci interrogano ancora.
