“Every epoch is an epoch of transition. We know only one thing about the future or, rather, the futures: it will not look like the present.” (Jorge Luis Borges) The European continent is changing, growing and integrating more and more. New and old migratory flows from East and South are deeply transforming the European societies and economies. The enlargement of the European Union in 2004 will bring 10 new member states in the Union joining that historical dichotomy between East and West arbitrarily dictated by the times of the Cold War. What are on stake are the future of the continent and the transatlantic relations after September 11 and the resulting war on terrorism. It remains to see how the integration process will be achieved and which institutional model will give shape to the varieties and peculiarities of the European nations and cultures.
