The article explores the main features of the intellectual path developed by Franco Cassano – recently passed away – trying to identify its political, juridical and institutional implications. The Apulian sociologist stood out from the context of the so-called école barisienne, soon and deeply rethinking the cornerstones of Marxist anthropology, in the name of a re-consideration of the transcendent human dimensions and of the dialectic between finite and infinite. After the epistemological turning point of the eighties, culminated with the work “Approssimazione” (approximation), Cassano develops his “Southern thought”, whose intellectual significance will be paradoxically obscured by its own civic and political success. “Il pensiero meridiano” (Southern thought) enhances the particular complicity between land and sea in the Mediterranean: the land is a metaphor for roots, for the acknowledgment of a symbolic origin; the sea, on the other hand, stands for emancipation, self-transcending and opening up to the Other. Cassano explores the intellectual and political fertility of this tension, which can be kept alive by the sense of "measure". Finally, the essay focuses on the last phase of Cassano's reflection, where the sociologist develops a strong critique of “providentialism”, that widely fills progressivist thought.
