Individual competencies have been a central concept in organizational studies since the mid-twentieth century. In the last two decades, competencies have also become an issue of central concern to strategic and management studies following recognition of their key relevance in obtaining competitive advantage. This paper aims to: 1) analyze the nature and main characteristics of the tools devised to identify and assess individual competencies, known in literature as “competencies models”; 2) offer a critical analysis of these tools with a view to evaluating their adequacy in terms of identifying and developing individual competencies that may be necessary for future actions; 3) explore some important empirical evidence to highlight the main limitations and failures to emerge from the application of strategies for identifying and assessing individual competencies; 4) outline some future research directions.

Abstract
Individual competencies have been a central concept in organizational studies since the mid-twentieth century. In the last two decades, competencies have also become an issue of central concern to strategic and management studies following recognition of their key relevance in obtaining competitive advantage. This paper aims to: 1) analyze the nature and main characteristics of the tools devised to identify and assess individual competencies, known in literature as “competencies models”; 2) offer a critical analysis of these tools with a view to evaluating their adequacy in terms of identifying and developing individual competencies that may be necessary for future actions; 3) explore some important empirical evidence to highlight the main limitations and failures to emerge from the application of strategies for identifying and assessing individual competencies; 4) outline some future research directions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
