The main aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the current knowledge on the ancient city of Sentinum, an important site mentioned in the ancient sources in occasion of two famous events, the so-called ‘Battle of Nations’, fought in 295 BC, and the bellum Perusinum, of the mid Ist century BC, when the city wsas destroyed by Octavian’s order. In the paper’s first section different assumptions are made about the exact place where the ‘Battle of Nations’ could have been fought, with particular reference to the theories advanced in the most recent years. The second section of the paper examines the history of discoveries and excavations, from the first identification of the site, due possibly to Ciriaco d’Ancona, to the season of theft and robberies culminating with the sale of the famous mosaic depicting Aión, now displayed in the Munich Glyptothek; and from the excavations carried by Raniero Mengarelli in the late nineteenth century to the excavations of the mid-twentieth century. In the paper’s third section the general knowledge of the context is summarized and updated, with particular regard to the data acquired by the archaeological (?) research. In the fourth and final section of this paper the guidelines of the new Research Project on Sentinum and some preliminary results of the activities carried on field between 2002 and 2004 are provided.

Abstract
In the fourth and final section of this paper the guidelines of the new Research Project on Sentinum and some preliminary results of the activities carried on field between 2002 and 2004 are provided.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
