From rhetoric to cognitive grammar: the linguistic research about synesthesia

The rhetorical studies and the linguistic research have dealt with the synesthesia ab origine. This chapter gives an account of the definitions and the classifications that have been provided by the most important experts of these two disciplines. Today the synesthesia is no longer considered a trinket of literary and poetic language and here it is presented as a cognitive resource of everyday life, an interface between words, thoughts and sensory perceptions. Through an examination of the rules of the synesthetic grammar and the semantics, these pages analyze different aspects relating to the directionality and the pragmatic implicatures.

Gli studi di retorica e di linguistica si sono occupati della sinestesia ab origine. In questo capitolo si dà conto di una serie di definizioni e di classificazioni che ne sono state fornite. Non più considerata un orpello della lingua letteraria e poetica, la sinestesia viene presentata qui come risorsa cognitiva della vita quotidiana, un’interfaccia tra parole, pensiero e percezioni sensoriali. Tra le norme che ne regolano il funzionamento e la semantica si analizzano con particolare attenzione quelle relative alla direzionalità e alle implicature pragmatiche.
