In this chapter, we review the potential application of metamaterials to microwave antennas. After a brief overview of the terminology here adopted, we present the physical mechanisms responsible for the new features providing metamaterial antennas with superior performances over their conventional counterparts. Then, we review the design of both patch antennas and leaky-wave antennas loaded with metamaterials, giving some numerical examples. Finally, we discuss the practical implementation of these antennas through real life inclusions in the light of the concepts of metamaterial based and metamaterial inspired antennas and components.

Abstract
In this chapter, we review the potential application of metamaterials to microwave antennas. After a brief overview of the terminology here adopted, we present the physical mechanisms responsible for the new features providing metamaterial antennas with superior performances over their conventional counterparts. Then, we review the design of both patch antennas and leaky-wave antennas loaded with metamaterials, giving some numerical examples. Finally, we discuss the practical implementation of these antennas through real life inclusions in the light of the concepts of metamaterial based and metamaterial inspired antennas and components.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
