CITTÀ STORICA E PAESAGGIO

Duration is indeed the most innovative aspect of the current reflection on the city, affecting its syntax and shaping its landscapes. Traditionally, in the “City of stones”, greenery had not its own statute: the "natura naturans" was pushed beyond the city walls, in the form of “saltus” and “silva” turning eventually into arable land, whereas the "natura naturata" burst quietly into private spaces protected by high fences, such as courtyards, gardens, and allotments. During the twentieth century, greenery has increasingly been used in order to underpin the plot structure of the city, somehow emphasizing its diverse value of form and memory. From the eighties onwards "nature in the city" has been absorbed also within plans and a variety of design tools, such as diagrams, guidelines, etc.

Il tema della durata è senz’altro l’aspetto più innovativo dell’attuale riflessione sulla città. Nella “città di pietra”, il verde non aveva un proprio autonomo statuto: la “natura naturans” era sospinta all’esterno delle mura urbane, nella forma del “saltus” e della “silva”, appropriabili successivamente come terra arabile, laddove la “natura naturata” si mostrava negli spazi protetti da recinzioni, nei cortili, nei giardini privati, negli orti. Nel ventesimo secolo, il verde è stato progressivamente incorporato anche nel disegno generale della città per sottolinearne la struttura, enfatizzandone i valori di forma e memoria. A partire dagli anni Ottanta, la “natura in città” è un traguardo condiviso da progettisti urbani e paesaggisti attraverso abachi, linee guida, progetti di suolo ecc.
