The chapter aims to analyze relative clauses. After a sketch of their structure in Latin, the typology both of matrix and relative clauses is detailed. Matrix clauses differ in the realization of the pivot and its semantic consequences. Relative clauses vary as for their position with regard to the lexical head and the matrix clause, relativization operations, the accessibility hierarchie, and relativization strategies. A proposal for a typological classification of Latin relative clauses is presented. On the basis of this taxonomy, a hypothesis for the reconstruction of their evolution is put forward and its main features are illustrated through the different stages in the history of Latin.

Abstract
The chapter aims to analyze relative clauses. After a sketch of their structure in Latin, the typology both of matrix and relative clauses is detailed. Matrix clauses differ in the realization of the pivot and its semantic consequences. Relative clauses vary as for their position with regard to the lexical head and the matrix clause, relativization operations, the accessibility hierarchie, and relativization strategies. A proposal for a typological classification of Latin relative clauses is presented. On the basis of this taxonomy, a hypothesis for the reconstruction of their evolution is put forward and its main features are illustrated through the different stages in the history of Latin.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
