Subtitling can prove to be both a powerful language learning tool and a way to revisit language and translation skills. By engaging learners in the process of discovering the characteristic features of a foreign language (FL) as well as those of their own mother tongue, their ability to notice how both the L1 and L2 systems work is enhanced. This article will illustrate how a group of adult learners involved in a post-graduate course for subtitling developed greater awareness of the language used in documentary films by devising subtitles for the Italian version of the documentaries.
