In her documentaries, Passing (1996) and fuori/outside (1997), Kym Ragusa interrogates the boundaries – of race, place, class, and gender – that have informed her life and the lives of the African American and Italian American communities of her origin. Both videos represent her search for and, at the same time, her questioning of such notions as ‘personal roots’ and ‘identity.’ Ragusa’s memoiristic approach in her documentaries, as well as her writing (The Skin Between Us, 2006), connects the ambivalent and multiple allegiances of her personal history to the history of the United States, foregrounding the diasporic and ethnic elements that constitute its (still often ignored) foundations.
