This chapter will address the issue of the relationship between Europe and the use of military after World War II force by canvassing the post World War II evolution of Western European defence and security policies, as well as by looking at the role of nuclear weapons in European security and at the shifting perceptions of war in European public opinion and mentality. It will hopefully demonstrate how the concept of a sharp post-war break with the past does not apply to the history of European security policies. Rather, the post-1945 period should be seen as one in which multiple narratives overlap following different timelines, and fragments of the old mentality co-exist side by side with new ones. -
