Abstract

The essay exposes some study related to the issue of preservation and restoration of historic city centres, the reorganization plan of Bergamo Alta (1936-1962), the activity of study and protection of minor architecture in Italy during the early decades of the XX century (with particularly reference to studies of P. Marconi, G. Capponi, E. Cerio, R. Pane, G. Pagano, C. Ceschi). The core of the studies is to highlight the worth of the architectural culture, marked by the debate on the use and form of the city, closely related to the study and project that seeks to restore and renew the continuity with the characters typological and morphological features of historic city centres. In the different examples reported, the theme of the art of building cities, diffused by the teaching of Sitte, Buls or Stübben, emerges as the art of reading and interpreting "the style of a city" and often to create it. Emphasizing the environmental aspect, the maximum efficiency of air and light, importance of historical and artistic value, road improvements, these are the topics of reference of the many measures in recent years supported the theory of thinning out proposed by Giovannoni since 1913. Comparing the historic and new building, you define the operating range of the architectural culture of the Twenties and Thirties years of the XX century, marked by the study and recognition of the different characters of art and environment that distinguish countries, cities and regions.
