This paper describes an in progress project aimed at harmonizing the performances of Universities and Public Institutions active as maintaining the Archaeological Cultural Heritage. The main goals of this research project, which has also an educational quality, are the preservation and use of the Ostia Antica archaeological site: these objectives will be achieved by involving the ability and the specific competency of Universities and Institutions concerned in a synergic action. Single steps will carry out the educational-research project on the Ostia Antica site, as follows: 1. Formulating, organizing and divulging an extended repertory made of both indirect and direct sources: bibliography sources, archivist and iconographic documents and drawing reliefs with graphic and photographic proceeds, respectively. The extended repertory will be useful in documenting the historic and material strength of the site; it will also allow the set up to the preservation on a scientific basis. 2. Planning projects and technical activity crucial in maintaining and recovering operations, aimed at successfully preserving the material characteristic of the monuments. 3. Planning management activities, of both artistic and scientific quality necessary to efficiently improve the use of the monuments by researchers and visitors. The project will address these outcomes: what must be done in order to assure the monuments’ preservation by using a successful maintenance plan; what is useful to do in order to contribute either to the knowledge of the objects, as far as their architectonical and material contents are concerned, or to a more correct and easier understanding. To sum up: the program will develop criteria and experiment methodologies and procedures for analysis and operations, all with the aim to design behavior quality models in restoration practice. These models will concern the documentation, the design and the technical realization of a restoration project and will represent the basis of operative guidelines to which restorers can refer to during restoration practice and management.
