The volume covers a series of definitions for the word "landscape" as received from different scholars of various disciplines (architects, artists, biologists, ecologists, philosophers, geographers, jurists, writers, semioticians, sociologists, historians and town planners). Francesco Ghio's contribution investigates the relationship that exists between sites, places and landscapes. Today, this is still how the meaning and value of the existing places and landscapes is interpreted, but also the quality standard needed - even if insufficient - to create new places and landscapes.

Il volume raccoglie una serie di definizioni di paesaggio richieste a studiosi appartenenti a diverse discipline (architetti, artisti, biologi, ecologi, filosofi, geografi, giuristi, scrittori, semiotici, sociologi, storici, urbanisti). Il contributo di Francesco Ghio indaga il rapporto tra siti, luoghi e paesaggi che è ancora oggi la chiave di lettura del significato e del valore di luoghi e paesaggi esistenti e il presupposto di qualità necessario, anche se non sufficiente, per la creazione di nuovi luoghi e nuovi paesaggi.
