In Joyce's "Dubliners", the complex organisation of narrative time is mirrored by a crafty organisation of narrative space, both in the macrostructure, where the alternation of stories en plein air and stories set in enclosed spaces creates a quasi cinematic rhythm, and within each story, where stairs, windows, crowded rooms and empty trams create a subtle language. Through the analysis of some meaningful scenes at the window, the essay reconstructs the poetics of space on which Joyce's stories are based.

Abstract

In Joyce's "Dubliners", the complex organisation of narrative time is mirrored by a crafty organisation of narrative space, both in the macrostructure, where the alternation of stories en plein air and stories set in enclosed spaces creates a quasi cinematic rhythm, and within each story, where stairs, windows, crowded rooms and empty trams create a subtle language. Through the analysis of some meaningful scenes at the window, the essay reconstructs the poetics of space on which Joyce's stories are based.
