This article focuses on how Platonist philosophers from I BC to III AD interpreted the rival Stoic theory of knowledge and in particular the theory of the common notions. It is argued that these authors (Antiochus, Alcinous, Plutarch, Galen, Plotinus, Porphyry) adopted sophisticated strategies that aimed to incorporate the rival theory within an overall Platonist view of knowledge. However, each one developed this approach in a highly distinctive way so that there were different kinds of Platonism(s).

Abstract
This article focuses on how Platonist philosophers from I BC to III AD interpreted the rival Stoic theory of knowledge and in particular the theory of the common notions. It is argued that these authors (Antiochus, Alcinous, Plutarch, Galen, Plotinus, Porphyry) adopted sophisticated strategies that aimed to incorporate the rival theory within an overall Platonist view of knowledge. However, each one developed this approach in a highly distinctive way so that there were different kinds of Platonism(s).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
