According to Fabro, Aquinas’ notion of act of being is an absolutely original philosophical idea originating from a ‘superior synthesis’ between the Neoplatonic metaphysics of Form and Aristotle’s theory of act. In the last decades, however, some attempts have been made to find a clear-cut distinction between being (as act of being) and essence in a number of ancient Neoplatonic works (esp. Plotinus’ Enn. VI 8 [39] and the anonymous Commentary on Plato’s Parmenides). The present paper aims to show that these interpretations are not compelling. Hence, Fabro’s overall interpretation certainly needs qualifications, but is still basically correct.

Abstract
According to Fabro, Aquinas’ notion of act of being is an absolutely original philosophical idea originating from a ‘superior synthesis’ between the Neoplatonic metaphysics of Form and Aristotle’s theory of act. In the last decades, however, some attempts have been made to find a clear-cut distinction between being (as act of being) and essence in a number of ancient Neoplatonic works (esp. Plotinus’ Enn. VI 8 [39] and the anonymous Commentary on Plato’s Parmenides). The present paper aims to show that these interpretations are not compelling. Hence, Fabro’s overall interpretation certainly needs qualifications, but is still basically correct.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
