Pietro Bembo's Prose della volgar lingua had been a very important model for Vasari's Lives, although totally understimated. Bembo had been the first one to adopt Cicero's idea of progress of ancient rethoric to analyze the literature of his own recent past, and Vasari, sollicitated by Prose's second edition (1538), followed him using the same model for painting, sculpture and architecture.
Le Prose della volgar lingua di Pietro Bembo hanno costituito un modello molto importante, ancorché non riconosciuto, per le Vite di Vasari. Bembo è stato il primo ad usare l'idea di progresso della retorica antica formulata da Cicerone per analizzare la letteratura del passato recente, e Vasari, sollecitato dalla seconda edizione delle Prose (1538) ne ha seguito l'esempio adottando lo stesso schema per la pittura, la scultura e l'architettura.
