The essay discusses the interplay between the different phases of the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the evolution of the European security policy. It is divided in three main sections, one looking at the first phase of the war and in particular at the European reactions to the crisis in Bosnia, one focusing on the so-called lessons from the solution of the crisis as they developed in the mid-1990s, and a final one discussing the relationship between the birth of the CSDP and the war in Kosovo.
