The paper proposes a semicontinuous response model to describe data with an excess of zeros. For the continuous part of the model a skew normal and a skew-t distributions are both considered. Statistical properties of the model are discussed for the skew-case. The model is illustrated by using data about alcohol expenditure in italian households.
