This chapter seeks to shed some light onto the field of Italian international relations from the end of World War II up to the major transformations of 1989-1991. To this purpose, it is structured into two main sections of unequal length. The first briefly canvasses the main theoretical explanations longer, while a second longer section explores more in detail the different phases of its evolution throughout the Cold War. A final paragraph offers some concluding remarks and tries to recap its main features.
