Abstract

The theory of attachment is, also according to Bowlby, an open ended theory, able to comprehend the findings that result From other approaches. Between the plurality of scientific disciplines that the author consider in all his theory, we chose to examine, From an historical perspective, the relationship between the theory of attachment and the theoretical and empirical work of Jean Piaget. At this purpose, the author has reviewed the work of Bowlby, to find the quotations of Bowlby about Jean Piaget. It has been found that Bowlby: a) in the analysis of the processes of separation and loss, often utilizes Piaget's concept of permanent objects; b) to describe the relationship between caregiver and chi/d, utilizes the concept of egocentrism and shares with Jean Piaget the idea that the caregiver is the base for the exploration of the child. Lastly, analogies between the concept of Piagetian schema and Bowlby's concept of working models have been discussed. The author considers that the examination of the Piaget's contribution to the theoretical, empirìcal and clinical approach of John Bowlby offers a new perspective regarding the basic concepts of the theory of attachment, is also useful for didactic purposes in the study of cognitive and emotional processes and represents an important instrument of integration
