Las frontieras de Shanty Town / The frontiers of Shanty Town

Catalog of the exibition "MARJETICA POTRC Urban Negotiation" at IVAM - Institut Valencià d’Art Modern. Before being an artist, architect or urban anthropologist — as one who seeks interdisciplinary routes to the city is often defined —, Marjetica Potrcˇ is a person who goes through those cities that are growing inordinately in any corner of the globe and that constitute the great amnesia of our mental maps. Like Italo Calvino’s Marco Polo, Marjetica Potrcˇ narrates “invisible” cities: mobile cities which are rooted deep under the waters, like Pozzuoli, and cities which emerge again from the water, like Guerrero Viejo; Israeli cities that stop for one instant to mourn their dead, petrifying houses and men as in Pompeii, and cities in whose streets the occupants never meet with the occupied, as in Palestine; cities where the foundation columns of houses are exposed, waiting with perennial hope for the upper floors, as in Calabria, and cities erased from the official maps, as in Caracas. To this “invisible” city which in recent years has been defined as “trivial”, “generic”, “tin”, “nomad”, “emerging” or “unconscious”, Marjetica Potrcˇ has given the name “Shantytown”: a chaotic city in which thereare no rules other than those referring to its self-organization, a city to which more than a million people move every three days. Today Shantytown has overcome many of the borders imposed by our society and has even come to exist right under our houses; space is opened in any corner that might still be vacant, a place is found in any crook or cranny in which, because of a lack of control, it is still possible to build one’s own environment in full liberty. Shantytown is in fact an unstable place that defines itself every day and that every day finds the energy and the intelligence to modify its multiple identity and the norms for its intercultural cohabitations. Perhaps more than any other, it is the place in which an ever more uncertain and unstable fate wholly puts into play the redefinition of our environment. -

Abstract: Prima di essere artista, architetto o antropologa urbana - come spesso viene definito chi cerca strade interdisciplinari per lavorare sulla città - Marjetica Potrč è una persona che attraversa quelle città che stanno crescendo a dismisura in ogni angolo del globo e che costituiscono la grande amnesia delle nostre mappe mentali. Come il Marco Polo di Italo Calvino, Marjetica Potrč narra di città “invisibili”, di città mobili che affondano nelle acque come Pozzuoli e di città che dalle acque riemergono come Guerrero Viejo; città israeliane che per piangere i propri morti si arrestano per un istante pietrificando case e uomini come nell’antica Pompei e città in cui le strade degli occupanti non incrociano mai quelle degli occupati come in Palestina; città dove le case hanno pilastri in perenne attesa dei piani superiori come in Calabria e città cancellate dalle mappe ufficiali come a Caracas. A questa città “invisibile” che è stata negli ultimi anni definita “banale”, “generica”, “di latta”, “nomade”, “emergente” o “inconscia”, Marjetica Potrč ha dato il nome di “Shanty Town”: una città caotica in cui non esistono altre regole se non quelle dell’autoorganizzazione, una città in cui ogni tre giorni si muove più di un milione di persone. Oggi Shanty Town ha superato molti dei confini frapposti dalla nostra società ed è arrivata ad abitare fin sotto le nostre case, si è fatta spazio in ogni interstizio ancora rimasto vuoto, ha trovato luogo in ogni piega in cui per mancanza di controllo sia ancora possibile autocostruire in piena libertà il proprio ambiente. Shanty Town è infatti uno spazio instabile che si autodefinisce ogni giorno e che ogni giorno trova l’energia e l’intelligenza per modificare la sua molteplice identità e le regole delle sue convivenze interculturali. È forse più di tutti il luogo in cui si sta giocando la ridefinizione dell’intero nostro ambiente dal destino sempre più incerto ed instabile. -
