The Encomium to the Saints Constantine and Helena by Euthymius, Patriarch of Tărnovo, and the Ideology of Power in the Medieval Bulgaria The Encomium to the Saints Constantine and Helena, written in the last quarter of the fourteenth century by Euthymius, Patriarch of Tărnovo and dedicated to zar Ivan Šišman (1371-1393), is not only the first lengthy Slavonic hagiographic–panegiristic work glorifying the first Christian Emperor, but a text with important ideological and political overloading. In it, as in his Life of St. John from Rila, Euthymius develops the favorite idea of «political hesychasm» of superiority of the spiritual power over the secular (and in particular of the patriarchal over the Imperial): an idea which at the end of the ninth century germinated in the circle of the Patriarch of Constantinople Photius, but which, for various reasons, had no luck either then or on the eve of the collapse of the Balkan Christian world under Ottoman authority.

Abstract
John from Rila, Euthymius develops the favorite idea of «political hesychasm» of superiority of the spiritual power over the secular (and in particular of the patriarchal over the Imperial): an idea which at the end of the ninth century germinated in the circle of the Patriarch of Constantinople Photius, but which, for various reasons, had no luck either then or on the eve of the collapse of the Balkan Christian world under Ottoman authority.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
