Il saggio s'incentra su un radiodramma mai indagato prima, di Kenneth Patchen e John Cage, "The City Wears a Slouch Hat". La natura fortemente sperimentale dell'opera attrasse il pubblico che scrisse alla produzione: tra tutte la lettera entusiasta di Merce Cunningham (anche questa inedita). L’uso di documenti inediti consistenti nel carteggio degli ascoltatori del dramma in onda alla radio in un solo giorno del 1942 denota originalità e, al contempo, rivela al grande pubblico un esperimento di John Cage poco o per nulla conosciuto.
