"Bargaining with the American Language: Lina Angioletti's Translations"

Dalla scrittura dei cosiddetti L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E= poets, incentrata com’è sulla frase e su unità linguistiche situate su un livello superiore o inferiore, si devono escludere elementi strettamente legati al significato e alla sintassi. Tale poesia è organizzata, costruita, manipolata, disegnata perché acquisti una forma che poggia su elementi casuali e provenienti direttamente dal corpo. Di tali elementi è ricca la poesia di Kenneth Patchen, la traduzione in italiano dei cui “poesaggi” Roberto Sanesi affidò, negli anni cinquanta, alla giovane Lina Angioletti, poeta lei stessa, che si dovette confrontare con un mondo poetico dell’assurdo poco esplorato dagli scrittori italiani. Lavorando sui poèmes en prose di Patchen Angioletti sviluppò strategie di scrittura che non solo diventarono una caratteristica della sua poesia, ma consentirono anche al pubblico italiano di leggere poeti Americani tradotti da lei (Marianne Moore, per esempio) in una maniera più consona allo spirito dell'originale.

The writing of so-called L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E= poets rests upon arbitrariness and tends to exclude certain elements of signification and reference. It is, therefore, organized, constructed, designed, and manipulated by a writer, whose purpose is that of making ing a “poetry of shape”, that partakes of a “casual-and-gestural” quality. Kenneth Patchen’s poetry has many characters that he shares with the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E= poets; so, when poet Lina Angioletti was asked by Roberto Sanesi, in the fifties, to translate his “poemscapes”, she was confronted with a poetic world of absurdity, yet unexplored by Italian writers. Working on Patchen’s prose poems, Angioletti developed language writing strategies that became a feature of her own poetry and that enriched her way of translating, allowing her to make other American poets (Marianne Moore, for example) known to the Italian public in the nearest possible modes and spirit of the original.
