Nicola Cavalieri San Bertolo (1788-1867), engineer and architect, professor of Architettura statica e idraulica (statics principles and hydraulic), publishes the first edition of Istituzioni di architettura statica e idraulica in Bologna in 1826-27. The topics presented in the manual belongs to the instructions given by the Scuola degli Ingegneri pontifici, because the book was designed as an easy and detailed manual of architecture practice, able to compare theoretical doctrines, representative cases and structural foundations. The descriptions, the references, the comparative examples of the monuments of architectural history, especially Roman architecture and Palladian architecture, are aimed at solving problems related to the art of built. The two volumes (Vol. I: p. 1-279, pis. 1-35 / vol. II: pp. 1-430, pis. 32), are divided into five books, accompanied by illustrative tables, and the description of the different arguments has numerous references to classical treatises from Vitruvius to Vincenzo Scamozzi, as well as systematic references to the French school (Belidor, 1729, 1737-1770; Rondelet, 1802-1817; Sganzin, 1809; Gauthey, 1809-1816; Navier, 1823-1826; Borgnis, 1818-1820 and 1823). For the large of topics covered and expository clarity, Cavalieri ‘s manual represented the best of polytechnic education that integrates ancient tradition and new scientific and technical progress in the knowledge of the art of built.
