How can philosophy contribute positively to the interactions between humans and the natural reality in which they live, to improve the socio-political development and increase free and responsible culture, in short to usefully contribute to the concrete life of humanity? These questions make the tissue of the vast work of John Dewey, an exemplary figure of 'public philosopher’ , constantly motivated by concern for the risks to the individual and social reality, but also by faith in the emancipatory potential of critical and reflective capabilities of human intelligence, of its possibility to project and act on reality. The volume draws a critical overview of the crucial issues of Dewey's thought, showing its relevance to the current debate on the relationship between mind, nature and society, as well as its typical efforts to promote habits of thought marked by the fallibility of science no less than the acute awareness of the ethical implications of scientific and philosophical ideas.
