Abstract

The book is an intellectual biography of alan turing with special regards to his idea of machine. The volume's main issue is the theoretical and historical discussion of Turing's position with regards to what is a machine, and what are the tasks that a machine can accomplish if correctly programmed. In order to understand this crucial question the book tries to trace back from the original logical work accomplished by Turing. Moreover the sources of his thought need to be retrieved back to his war experience as code breaker in bletchley park. the final and central contribution of the book is about the idea of machine intelligence promoted by turing's vision of intelligence and of mechanical devices. The book tries to dig into this set of tools for a better understanding of the inspirational role that he played among the pioneers of mechanical intelligence. both cybernetical approach and artificial intelligence reclaim turing as one of their masters. The two final chapters seek to offer reasonable explanation of why this was the case. The project of the book is to escape all the easy ways of describing Turing's contribution to machine intelligence. it offers an original vision of his position that was difficult to enrole in each group (cyberneticians and ARtificial intelligence followers). His original position did not have enough time to express all its potentialities and still in the recent solutions proposed to the problems of machine intelligence many of the scientists reclaim Turing as their inspirational source.
