La mente in bilico: le basi filosofiche della scienza cognitiva (Mind on the Edge. The Philosophical Bases of Cognitive Science)

This book is a philosophical introduction to cognitive science. Emphasis is put on foundational and methodological issues. The general frameworks and research programs currently alive in the field are presented and confronted, highlighting their merits and shortcomings. Problems still waiting for a solution are extensively discussed. The debate on theoretical foundations on cognitive science has been very intense in the last twenty years, and the proliferation of research programs alternative to “classical cognitive science” (such as situated robotics, artificial life, dynamic systems theory) has given rise to the impression of being in a Kuhnian crisis phase. This book aims to make a contribution to this debate, providing the reader with a compass to find one’s own way through this intricate debate. The volume provides a state of the art, and outlines possible future perspectives as well. The book is articulated in four chapters. The first two chapters present the two cornerstones of classical cognitive science: computational functionalism and the modularity thesis. In chapter 3 the relationship between psychology and neuroscience is explored, with a focus on neural networks and cognitive neuroscience. Chapter 4 addresses the attempt to re-embody and situate cognition by the research programs of the so-called “post-classical cognitive science”, especially the “sensorimotor paradigm” (e.g., Dana Ballard’s animate vision paradigm and Rodney Brooks’ behavior-based robotics) and the dynamic nonlinear systems approach to cognition. In the conclusion the author takes sides with a reformist approach that critically explores the prospects of integrating new theoretical ideas emerging from the post-classical cognitive science research into a computational and representational framework.

Il volume è un’introduzione alla filosofia della scienza cognitiva. Negli ultimi vent’anni il dibattito sui fondamenti concettuali della scienza cognitiva è stato molto intenso e la proliferazione di programmi di ricerca alternativi al cognitivismo classico (come il connessionismo, la robotica situata e la teoria dei sistemi dinamici) ha generato l’impressione che la scienza cognitiva sia entrata in una fase di crisi. Obiettivo del libro è fornire al lettore uno strumento per orientarsi in questo intricato dibattito e arrivare a formulare un giudizio personale in merito all’effettivo stato di salute della scienza cognitiva. Il testo è suddiviso in quattro capitoli. Il primo è un’introduzione storico-concettuale all’idea stessa di scienza cognitiva; il secondo presenta la più importante sistemazione filosofica dei fondamenti del cognitivismo classico, vale a dire la teoria computazionale e rappresentazionale della mente di Jerry Fodor; il terzo è dedicato al rapporto tra psicologia e neuroscienza; il quarto e ultimo capitolo si occupa della recente espansione verso l’ambiente della scienza cognitiva cosiddetta corporea e situata.
