Starting with the premise that any act of mediation implies some degree of “compromise”, this manual sets out to define the boundaries of this compromise. The opening chapters discuss text-typologies and functions, and introduce basic concepts such as ST/TT relations, text-evaluation and adaptation, fidelity and creativity in translation, translation strategies. Within this theoretical framework, the book aims to combine methodological and practical aspects. Linguistic and cultural problems, together with solution-finding strategies are described: issues such as sentence structure, re-categorisation, word-order and transposition, emphasis, punctuation, forms of speech (direct and indirect style, FIS), figures of speech, and verb tenses, are offered and debated in a translation perspective, with special emphasis given to the praxis of English-Italian translation. Drawing on relevant (mainly literary) examples, the concluding in-depth study of chosen fictional passages (in English and in Italian) offers a parallel analysis of both ST and TT, together with the evaluation of the translating strategies put into effect, and considerations on the prospective preservation of relevant sound effects (phonological and rhythmical features).

Abstract
Drawing on relevant (mainly literary) examples, the concluding in-depth study of chosen fictional passages (in English and in Italian) offers a parallel analysis of both ST and TT, together with the evaluation of the translating strategies put into effect, and considerations on the prospective preservation of relevant sound effects (phonological and rhythmical features).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
