Modernity Out of Joint. Global Democracy and Asian Values in Juergen Habermas and Amartya Sen

The book redefines our global age as the time in which modernity has gone "out of joint". Taking seriously today's claim to cultural differences "Modernity out of Joint" highlights the multidimensional character of concepts such as modernity and modernization, and addresses such question as: What happens to the traditional and well-established notion of "modernity" when we can no longer rely on a single center of the world? How does our conception of rights change when confronted with the "democracy of others"? The book deals with these pressing issues through a survey of two widely influential paradigms of contemporary democratic theory: J. Habermas' discourse ethics and A.K. Sen's capabilities approach. In both cases, the global challenge represented by today's claim to cultural difference against the Western canon motivates us to revise some fundamental assumption of modern political anthropology. At the same time, this challenge invites us to revive the unexpressed potential still latent in the building blocks of Western thought and experience, in view of a renewed multilateral universalism.

Il volume prende in esame la condizione che vede il tracimare della logica individualistica del mercato e della concezione liberale dei diritti oltre i confini della civiltà euro-atlantica e la proliferazione di narrative identitarie eccentriche e di costellazioni culturali irriducibili all'ordine europeo dei valori. Nell'esaminare questa condizione il libro ripercorre le linee di due paradigmi eminenti della recente teoria democratica: l'etica del discorso di J. Habermas e l'approccio delle capacità di A. Sen. In ambedue i casi, la sfida lanciata dalle "democrazie degli altri" spinge a revocare in questione alcuni assunti fondamentali dell'antropologia politica moderna, e al contempo a rivitalizzare il potenziale inespresso tuttora racchiuso nella tradizione dell'universalismo occidentale.
