The volume Ambiente e architetture di San Giovanni in Fiore is the summary of multiannual research, conducted with Diego Maestri, on the Gioacchino da Fiore homeland. To date, the town and its environment have never been studied so the book represents a first well-structured and in depth attempt to understand the reasons of the settlement and development of the Silan urban centre built in a territory, in many respects, difficult and hostile to man . The main research subjects are, on the one hand, the relationship between environment and the urban area and, on the other hand, the finding and analysis of the historic centre significant architectures, in the different urban foundation and expansion phases. I have, in particular, analysed the development of the urban centre and the architectural features of the built-up area, beginning with the late 18th century architecture. Survey has been the tool which has made it possible to find architectural features peculiar to the Silan urban centre and to reconstruct the disappeared buildings original facies. I’ve aimed at carrying out research which could highlight the architectural and urban quality of interventions which followed one another until the mid-20th century, when political, economic and social reasons led to a progressive detachment of building and dwelling manners from the places nature. In view of the breaking off of the symbiotic relationship between architecture and environment, recognizable not only by the different extent of the building works but also by materials and colours, we tried, through the drawing, to grasp and extract those fragments of architecture which testify to an old, wise, respectful of the environment and human-scale way of building. The book is divided into chapters, some of which (chaps. 5, 6, 7, 8) have some special focus pages. Chapters 3-5-6-7-8 (117 pages in all) and the related drawings I have done deal with: Chap. 3 Development of the urban centre - Chapter 3 touches on the political and economic reasons which led to the foundation of the Casale in 1530. A careful examination of archival documents, bibliographical sources and of some considerations of the churches construction and the presence of the old aqueduct has led to hypothesize a succession of expansion phases, until the urban layout testified by the 1873 cadastral map. Chap. 5 Architectural features of buildings between the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries - Chapter 5 describes the architectural features of buildings built by economically richest families since the late 18th century, highlighting their urban role in the close-grained urban fabric, through drawings and surveys. Chap. 6 The architectural language between the late 19th and early 20th centuries - In chapter 6 some architectures which can be defined “minor”, but in which it is possible to find original and interesting elements, have been, for the first time, analysed. Some early 20th century palaces, whose building confirms the presence of skilled workers who paid attention to all that happened in the architectural field in the largest cities of southern Italy, have also been studied. Chap. 7 Architectural and decorative elements between the 18th and early 20th centuries - My purpose has been to testify, through drawings and photos, to the high quality of the San Giovanni artistic production relative to the making of decorative elements. The different types of portals present in the village have been surveyed, and their relationship with the buildings they belong to has been also analysed. The same approach has been used in the analysis of the different types of decorative brackets supporting balconies. Chap. 8 “I vagli” - This chapter describes the urban function which covered walkways have taken on in the urban fabric of the village, coming to the classification in homogeneous groups. Special focus pages, in which each “vaglio” (covered walkway) is described by a brief note on a planimetric scheme, one or two photos and a survey drawing, follow. Both authors have written the premise the introduction and glossary.
Il volume “Ambiente e architetture di San Giovanni in Fiore”, costituisce la sintesi di una ricerca pluriennale, condotta insieme a Diego Maestri, dedicata alla patria di Gioacchino da Fiore. La città e il suo contesto ambientale non erano, fino ad oggi, stati studiati e, pertanto, il volume rappresenta un primo tentativo, articolato ed approfondito, per comprendere le ragioni dell’insediamento e dello sviluppo del centro silano sorto in un territorio, per molti aspetti, difficile ed ostile all’uomo. I temi di ricerca principali sono, da un lato, la relazione tra ambiente e centro abitato e, dall’altro, l’individuazione e la lettura degli episodi architettonici significativi del centro storico, nelle diverse fasi di impianto e di espansione urbana. In particolare mi sono occupata di analizzare lo sviluppo del centro urbano e i caratteri architettonici dell’abitato a partire dalle architetture di fine Settecento. Il rilevamento è stato lo strumento che ha consentito di pervenire alla individuazione di caratteri architettonici peculiari del centro silano e anche di ricostruire la facies originaria di contesti edilizi oggi quasi del tutto scomparsi. L’obiettivo è stato quello di avviare una prima indagine conoscitiva che mettesse in evidenza la qualità architettonica e urbana degli interventi succedutisi fino alla metà del Novecento, secolo nel quale, ragioni politiche, economiche e sociali hanno determinato un progressivo allontanamento dei modi di costruire e abitare i luoghi rispetto alla natura dei luoghi stessi. Oramai, interrotto il rapporto simbiotico tra architettura e ambiente, percepibile non solo nella diversa dimensione degli interventi edilizi, ma anche nei materiali e nei colori, abbiamo tentato, attraverso il disegno, di cogliere ed estrapolare quei frammenti di architettura che testimoniano di una maniera di costruire antica e saggia, rispettosa dell’ambiente e a misura d’uomo. Il libro è organizzato in capitoli, alcuni dei quali (capp. 5, 6, 7, 8) presentano delle schede di approfondimento.
